Show me your habits, and I’ll tell you who you are.

The types of habits that we have say a lot about us. They show to ourselves and others what is important to us, as well as how dedicated we are to whatever mission that we’re working towards. You can recognize the type of person someone is by the fruit that they bear, and if your habits bear no fruit, it’s time to make some changes, else you go another season and forgo the harvest that God intends for you to have. This very clearly makes me think about the time that Jesus cursed the fig tree.
Now the next day, when they had come out from Bethany, He was hungry. And seeing from afar a fig tree having leaves, He went to see if perhaps He would find something on it. When He came to it, He found nothing but leaves, for it was not the season for figs. In response Jesus said to it, “Let no one eat fruit from you ever again.”
And His disciples heard it.

Are you leaving things on the table because you refuse to put an end to habits that have obviously run their course? Take 5 minutes to reflect on the habits that you have, and decide whether or not they are bearing fruit. If they are, keep doing them! But if they’re not, see if you can think back to when that habit started, and why you keep doing it. Awareness is always the first step to any major change that you want to make in your life.
For example, wanting to be a healthier person in 2020 is a nice idea, but if you haven’t integrated more fruits & vegetables into your diet, as well as an exercise routine, chances are that you’ll be at the same point this time next year, talking about wanting to be healthier in 2021. Dig deep and discover a compelling WHY that pulls you to change habits, rather than pushing yourself to do something, which you’ll most likely lose steam for once you hit your personal wall.
Purpose is inspiring, and habits will have no choice but to follow suit.
